AFI 36-2903, Table 2.8: Hat? No Hat?
by  Master Sgt. Ray Dell'Ara, First Sergeant, 13th RS

Most of us don our cover without thinking about it. Just as subconsciously, we remove it when/if the need or regulation(s) permit...it's part of our military culture and has become as natural and automatic as blinking our eyes. So what happens when a situation arises when neither the need nor regulation seem to apply...you know, that "gray area"?

I pulled up to the base service station recently after a UTA and noticed a uniformed staff sergeant pumping gas with no cover. She was under the impression that, because an overhanging roof shadowed her vehicle, she wasn't required to don her cover. This isn't about right or wrong. It's not even about regulations. It's about doing the right thing irrespective of our knowledge of the regulations. It's about individual pride, accountability, responsibility, and integrity.

When we are in public, off or on base, I challenge each of you to be mindful of the image you project. Integrity is defined as "...doing the right thing when no one is looking." Rest assured...that young child, airman, father, veteran, etc., is watching, so be watched doing the right thing!
